When the weather ranges between 22-28°C throughout the year and the water temperature varies between 19-23°C, it’s an excellent combination for water activities, especially surfing!
On the island’s beaches, you’ll encounter everyone from novice surfers with no experience to professional wave riders. The island even hosts major international competitions annually.
Tenerife has much more to offer beyond surfing, such as a lush and stunning rainforest in the north, the world’s largest water park, natural basalt rock formations, the third-highest volcano in the world, an observatory, and more.
Living costs are low, and accommodations cater to every budget—from Airbnb guesthouses or simple hotels suitable for backpackers post-military service, to luxurious 5-star hotels for those who want to enjoy all the comforts.
You can rent a car for up to €20 per day, with fuel costing around €1 per liter, making getting around the island very affordable, simple, and convenient.
High Waves: October-February
During this period, the northern part of the island experiences very high and powerful waves, suitable mainly for experienced and professional surfers.
In contrast, the southern part of the island during this period has waves suitable for both beginners and more experienced surfers.
In the summer, the situation reverses, and the waves in the north become weaker and more suitable for those without professional experience, while the waves in the south become higher and more challenging.
Surfing: Not Necessarily an Expensive Sport
Whether you’re a beginner unsure of what equipment you need or a professional surfer who couldn’t bring their board due to travel constraints, you’ll always find surf schools and equipment rental points scattered across the island.
A wetsuit rental costs around €10 for half a day, a surfboard rental about €20 for half a day, and if you fall in love with surfing, it’s worthwhile to rent a surfboard for seven days for approximately €100.
You can usually book a two-hour surfing lesson, including all necessary equipment, for around €30.
